Choosing how much to eat on the six meals a day diet is a reasonably simple affair.

We think in terms of portion sizes instead of calories or fat consumed which pleasantly means no checking tables of figures or labels on food.

We also aim to eat “first principles” food - that is natural foods not processed foods - such as lean meat, fruit, vegetables, milk, bread, pittas and so on.

Simple, honest, reasonably-priced foods that can be picked up anywhere and prepared in a matter of minutes - which is so useful to people on the go - and let’s be honest - we’re all busy people these days and getting more time-starved every day.

I reckon on 20 minutes to prepare and eat a meal at the most - often less so the six meals a day diet should fit into anyone’s schedule without effort.

But how much is a portion?

A portion - simply put - is the amount of food that would cover the palm of your hand or a portion the size of your fist.

Enough chicken to cover the palm of your hand. A jacket potato the size of your fist. Enough pasta to cover the palm of your hand. And so on.

These portion sizes are easy to visualize when you get into it. How many eggs are a portion, for example? I would say 2-3 and have found this works well.

For vegetables excluding potatoes I don’t tend to worry too much about portion sizes and use beans, peas, carrots, salad and so on to bulk up a meal and feel more full at the end.

So how much should you eat on each of the six meals you’re going to consume each day?

The answer is that each meal should consist of one portion of protein and one of carbohydrates. Add to this a glass or two of water and 3 or 4 portions of fruit and vegetables per day and that’s all there is to the six meals a day diet.

I further suggest to make life as easy as possible for yourself that you begin using the information on this web site to decide on a few “standard” meals that are quick and easy (almost “brainless”) to prepare, and that you will enjoy.

Use these as a basis for your diet eating a few of these each day to make life simple.

I, for one, am not good in the morning, so a bowl of healthy cereal containing bran flakes and mixed dried fruit together with some ice-cold skim milk is easy and tasty for me to prepare.

With the other meals try to include some variety which, together with the vegetables you’ll be eating, will help give you a varied diet and minimize the chances of any nutrient imbalances in your body.

How much you choose to eat of your “staple” meals and how much of the “new, varied” meals is up to you, how much patience you have and how easily you get bored.

So go have some fun.
